| FIRST THEATRE SPACE OF THE WORLD |
EARLIEST THEATRE SPACE IN DHOLAVIRA - KUCHCHH !
Having done doctoral studies in informal theatre spaces, I searched cave theatres in Orissa, circular theatres in Gwalior, open air square theatre in Nagarjun konda in south India etc.
In the meantime our archeologists came across a strip of wide long piece of land in early Harappan civilization site at Dholavira in Kutchha part of Gujarat.
It is earliest the performing space for various types of programmes- processions, races, dance, music, drametic pieces - very similar to Mystery and Miracle plays in medievel times. Similar treditions have been preserved in Rathyatra in Orissa and Tagiya during Mahoram and various types of fairs in some parts of India
I have produced two video documentries for brodcast on Television India.
A detailed research article is ready to bring to the notice of the world theatre community that Harappan civilisation of Dholavira and Lothal belongs to 4000 to 4500 years ago and therefore it is the earliest performing space.
Our Theatre Media Center Archives Research Team and Gujarat State Sangit Natak Academy organised last month a seminar on the topic, inviting archeologists, theatre architects, Sanskrit scholars, theatre workers and historians to evaluate the research material.
They agreed to this research in one voice !
